Design Your Own Coffee Mug

Design Your Own Coffee Mug

This project was really fun for me. I got this wonderful idea from a great blog called Holiday Crafts and Creations.  She has some great holiday gift tutorials and easy to understand instructions.  Designing this coffee mug was a great break in my creativity.  I really put some thought into what I wanted the mug to look like and then searched so many images to find the exact one that I wanted.  I learned a lot and had to tweak a few things just so it turned out the way I wanted it.  It is not perfect but it is nice.  I created it and I love that!  You of course can use any design that you want and tailor you mug to your preference.

 Let’s get to it!

 Here is what you need:

  • White mug
  • Porcelain paint or permanent marker
  • Paintbrush
  • Masking tape (3/4″ and 2″ wide)
  • Scissors
  • Printed design of choice

Instructions:

Wash mug and dry.  Place a piece of masking tape 1/2″ down from the rim and on the bottom of the cup. Tape around the bases of the handle so that the handle remains white.  Be sure to press the tape down firmly so the paint or marker won’t go under the edge of the tape.  Cut your pattern out and glue to mug.  Be careful not to use too much because it will yellow once cup bakes (see photo below).  Once design is adhered to mug, fill in the mug with color either with paint or marker.  Let glue and marker dry. If you are using porcelain pain, let it dry completely for at 24 hours so that the paint sets.  If using permanent marker, let dry for an hour.  Place mug on a baking sheet and bake on 400 degrees for 30 minutes.  Let cup cool before using.
